This morning I woke up early, brewed myself a coffee and proceeded to catch up on episodes of MasterChef and Iron Chef from last week. At some point in my viewing I had an urge to eat. I was sitting where I sit now writing and thinking predictably about food. Like a flash it comes to me. “I have an idea,” said Mark. It was decided I would cook banana bread. And I wanted it now! So my challenge began. I would have some fresh banana bread in my paws in 90 minutes time. The race was on. Below is a summary of my progress.
| Time | Description |
| 0 | Search internet for banana bread recipe |
| 1 | Ran out of the house towards the shopping centre |
| 2 | Ran past removal truck with someone’s life on their lawn, I spot a KitchenAid and I want it. |
| 3 | Waited at pedestrian crossing, would my quest be foiled by waiting at the lights. I hope not. |
| 7 | I walk into the Green Grocer and I find bananas for $1.99 kg on special, they must have known I was coming. |
| 14 | I scampered home with small beads of sweat just starting to form on my brow. |
| 24 | After ten hectic minutes in the kitchen I have everything measured, peeled and prepared. Time to start mashing and mixing |
| 31 | At last the bread is in the oven. The oven couldn’t quite get up to temperature quick enough, I could have got the bread in the oven three minutes ago. |
| 74 | Timer goes off!!! But it’s not quite cooked, I’ll put it on for another 5 minutes. |
| 79 | Timer goes off again, and still It’s not cooked. There is precious little time left. |
| 87 | Done!!!! At last it’s out of the oven and cooked. Three minutes to spare. |
I take a few quick photos and I dig in and I’m satisfied. The result was very moist and very bananary (yes I did just make that word up). Remember it’s okay to eat junk food if you cook it yourself.

HAHA You are too funny! It was like reading a transcript for the Amazing race! I’m still on the serach for the perfect banana bread, you know the very moist and thick ones that you buy at cafes (even though we know that they are mass produced).
I don’t consider this junk food, it has fruit in it

Whilst I agree with the fruit comment the fact it has a half a cup of oil in it makes it junk food. I felt dirty measuring it out.

I concur with Phuoc, this is not junk food. I’m sure I’ve got a good recipe laying around somewhere, will have to share it when I get the urge for banana bread. Yours would have been perfect with that coffee!

Oh, well done, it seems you got a bit of exercise to counteract the banana bread. You’re lucky to have scored some ripe-ish bananas – the ones I get are always several weeks away from being even remotely ripe!

Oh, I could feel the pressure just by reading this! Well done! Banana bread is not junk food, it’s bread, which is good for you… kinda… haha. Was it hard to mash those unblackened (i think i just made that up!) bananas?

I just threw the banana in the mixer and it did all the mashing for me. the were very pulverised after about two minutes or so.

I like to think that banana bread is actually very healthy-like a bread and not like a cake. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it

Terrific effort Mark, considering you could have just bought pre-made banana bread from a cafe near the supermarket, hehe…

Ooohhh, that was a tight race to the finish line indeed! And Mark, it’s never junkfood when the food name had ‘bread’ in it =p

Very glad that your plan wasn’t foiled by finding nothing but under-ripe bananas at the shop. Also, well done for not pilfering the Kitchen Aid (although I guess that would have slowed you down considerably).

If it is homemade and has fruit in it, then it has to be a health food! Plus think of the workout you got running to the shops, cooking, and photographing your mission. Well done, great post!
